Fender Marine Construction is the County Marine Contractor for Marion County Parks Department. One project we constructed for them last year was the Blue Run Canoe Launch in Dunnellon Florida. We protected the beautiful clear water from the turbid water created while jetting the pile in place by means of a floating turbidity curtain and a staked turbidity fence.
What is a Launch Dock
A launch dock is a type of dock used to get a canoe, kayak, or other small craft into the water. Using this structure allows you to get into and out of the boat as well as retrieve the boat easily. Most launches can be connected to a fixed or floating dock and moved to which ever side is best for launching.
How Do You Launch a Canoe
There are two main scenarios where you would be launching your canoe: from the shoreline or from a dock. When launching from the shore, you would approach the canoe placing it between your legs. When launching from a dock, you would balance yourself, slide your feet and bottom into the opening. Before launching, it is important to do a pre-launch check. You should make sure to check safety equipment is in place, essentials needed on the water, and if your canoe has a rudder or skeg is up.
Be Prepared To Go Out On The Water
We mentioned doing a check before going out onto the water. It’s crucial to be prepared in case of emergency or just getting lost. Make sure you have:
- Flashlight or headlamp
- Dry bag for personal items
- First-aid kit
- Portable floating device
- Emergency flare or strobe
Not all the equipment is necessary for every journey but you can choose from this list based on the length and distance to ensure you’re prepared.
